Poconos
Hunting
Pennsylvania
in its entirety is a great hunting ground with between one and one
and a half million white-tailed deer, but the Poconos hunting in
particular offers a wealth of opportunity for hunters.
There are an estimated 40 deer per square mile in Wayne County
in the Poconos, where our vacation rental homes are located.
Pennsylvania is second in the nation for the number of deer
caught each year. There are 1.2 million acres of state land in Pennsylvania,
much of it right nearby for great Poconos hunting.
In
addition to deer, other Poconos hunting options include black bear,
fox, coyote, raccoon, wild turkey, pheasants, ruffed grouse, rabbits,
groundhogs, mallards, Canadian geese, pintails, and squirrels.
There is also a lottery for a limited number of Poconos hunting
permits for bobcats.
State
Game Land 127, considered by many Poconos hunting enthusiasts to
be the most abundant and fruitful woods around in terms of game,
offers thousands of acres for terrific Poconos hunting.
Black bear and white-tailed deer are in the greatest big
game populations here. Promised
Land State Park and Rickett’s Glen State Park both offer excellent
Poconos hunting of small game.
Regional maps of Poconos hunting lands are available.
The
PA Game Commission Officer for the Northeast Region, Jim McCarthy,
has made the following game predictions for Poconos hunting:
RABBITS:
“The rabbit population is doing very well this year. SGL 159 is
a good bet for some fantastic rabbit hunting. If you have a dog,
you should not have any trouble getting several chases when you
go afield. Hunting should be excellent.”
PHEASANTS:
“For pheasants, hunters should try SGL 159, or the north end of
the Promptom Lake area. Promptom is a user-friendly area with good
cover and a nice walk for hunters. Due to the decreased numbers
of pheasants, hunting should be fair to good at best.”
RUFFED
GROUSE: “I have seen several grouse this summer with broods. Walking
the newly-cut areas of SGL 310 at Lake Henry and the thick areas
of SGL 159 should produce a good number of flushes. Hunting should
be good.”
SQUIRRELS:
“Squirrel hunting is often overlooked by most hunters, however,
hunting these crafty critters can give you and a youngster hours
of quality hunting opportunities. This is also excellent "practice"
for the big game seasons. All SGLs in Wayne County have sizeable
populations of squirrels. Hunting should be excellent.”
FURBEARERS:
“The furbearer population in Wayne County is as strong as ever.
Trappers and hunters should do well no matter the quarry they seek.
With a booming population of coyotes, I highly recommend people
give trapping coyotes a try. Your best bet is to ask an experienced
trapper to "show you the ropes." They are usually glad
to help get you started, but they might not show you "every"
trick in their book.”
WILD
TURKEY: The turkey population in Wayne County is doing very well.
Hunters can find these fine birds almost anywhere in the county.
Don't forget to report tagged birds. Hunting will be excellent.
BLACK
BEAR:” Bear hunting opportunities in the county are everywhere.
Your best bet is to hunt the large swamps with a good food supply
nearby. Organized drives in these areas are often productive. Hunting
should be good.”
DEER:
“The deer population in Wayne County is doing well. I have seen
several large-racked bucks already this year. One evening a field
about a mile from Downtown Hamlin held 42 deer. I believe hunters
who put time into preseason scouting and seeking permission to hunt
areas where they are seeing deer will do very well. “
